One of the reasons the numbers are not higher could be that the collection points are cluttered with the trays and crockery. At Block 726, Clementi West Street 2, I recently observed a cleaner single-handedly manning the collection station, which was just rows of shelves where diners placed their used trays. They would have to separate the plates, bowls and glasses and move them all to a washing point - such a manual process. On a recent trip to Europe, I noticed an automated collection station. A conveyor belt smoothly transferred the used crockery and trays to the kitchen or washing area, and a few workers systematically washed the utensils. Seeking clarification of facts published in The New Paper dated 15 Dec2012

Dear Sir / Madam Referring to the article submitted by me dated 15 Dec 2012: “Consider automated tray-return system”- The Government should fully fund an automation project if the tray-return initiative is to be more successful. -TNP I am concerned that the re-writing of my article actually changes the meaning of my original intentions. I am also worried that some facts might be misconstrued by the public. For example, it is published in THE NEW PAPER that “the recent pilot project to get hawker-centre customers to return their trays was only a partial success, with reportedly a maximum of 80 per cent doing so.” However, my submission clearly stated the success rate of people returning the tray is a paltry 60-70% and it can infer a very different meaning to readers from the “maximum rate of 80%” as published. Another example, your published article stated “I observed at Clementi that an elderly cleaner was handling the trays….” This might lead to the readers to think that...

Family resolution for the New Year Just say "No" to wireless, that’s my family resolution for the New Year. Children and adults alike are spending too much time on the net. We should be getting together as a family to create stronger bonds. Finding time to eat together as a family and maintain a healthier lifestyle are the two topmost on my list. Children who eat frequently with their families, for example, and actually sit down together at the family dinner table have healthier diets than those who do not. Studies have shown that children eating with their parents were eating less fast food, less soft drinks, and consuming more fruits and vegetables. What children eat in childhood and adolescence years determine their dietary patterns over time. As parents, this means we have to set good, healthful patterns earlier in life.
