Winter in the Desert All Rights Reserved 2012 Darren Chong 1 Dec 2011 Ashalamalakum! The adventures started off the night before with a minor hiccup. The taxi driver that I had pre-arranged said he is going to pick up passengers from 4am instead of 6 am and might not return to Jurong East in time in event he ferried a passenger away from the Western part of Singapore. Makes my blood boil.  Makes me really mad.  About to turn into the Incredible Green Thing, but decided not to let such a small matter hinder our big plan.  Decided instead to wait for the cab or flag a cab in the main road off Jurong East Street 21. As luck would have it, it rained early in the morning before 6am. We decided to call a ComfortDelgo taxi.  Lo and behold it was a former tour mate from the Yangtze River and 3 Gorges trip! Automation could make tray return much more efficient 04:46 AM Dec 13, 2012 From Darren Chong In the ongoing pilot tray-return initiative, surveys have found that 60 to 70 per cent of patrons are returning their trays. One of the reasons the numbers are not higher could be that the collection points are cluttered with the trays and crockery. At Block 726, Clementi West Street 2, I recently observed a cleaner single-handedly manning the collection station, which was just rows of shelves where diners placed their used trays. They would have to separate the plates, bowls and glasses and move them all to a washing point - such a manual process. On a recent trip to Europe, I noticed an automated collection station. A conveyor belt smoothly transferred the used crockery and trays to the kitchen or washing area, and a few workers systematically washed the utensils. Yes, this country’s too congested. People are suffocating. In trains, buses, hospitals, shopping centres, schools, swimming pools, libraries, work place, there are crowds everywhere. Very soon, the public resources of this country will not be able to support all its citizens, and non-citizens’ needs. The increasing penetrative lifestyle of this city-state is affecting the health and mental state of being. With more than 6000 people cramped into single square kilometre area, Singapore has one of the world's highest population densities. In comparison, London had a population density of only 4,700 people living in each square kilometre on average. England's population density is more than treble the European’s average of 117 people per sq km. Yet Singapore’s population density is far higher than that of London.
