Automate the Tray Return Collection Point to facilitate fast efficient collection of crockery NEA’s TRAY RETURN INITIATIVE 10 Dec 2012 The recent pilot tray return initiative appears to have garnered paltry response with only 60 to 70 per cent of patrons returning their trays. One of these reasons could be due to the fact that collection point or station for the trays and crockery was already full and cluttered with used trays and crockery. It was so disorderly! On a recent trip to Europe, I have noticed an automated collection station where return crockery oand trays where diners returned them to an automated ‘conveyor belt’. The ‘conveyor belt’ system works no different from a factory assembly line where the trays and crockery were smoothly transferred into the kitchen or washing area where a few workers systematically get to work to wash the utensils. Seeking clarification of facts published in The New Paper dated 15 Dec2012

Dear Sir / Madam Referring to the article submitted by me dated 15 Dec 2012: “Consider automated tray-return system”- The Government should fully fund an automation project if the tray-return initiative is to be more successful. -TNP I am concerned that the re-writing of my article actually changes the meaning of my original intentions. I am also worried that some facts might be misconstrued by the public. For example, it is published in THE NEW PAPER that “the recent pilot project to get hawker-centre customers to return their trays was only a partial success, with reportedly a maximum of 80 per cent doing so.” However, my submission clearly stated the success rate of people returning the tray is a paltry 60-70% and it can infer a very different meaning to readers from the “maximum rate of 80%” as published. Another example, your published article stated “I observed at Clementi that an elderly cleaner was handling the trays….” This might lead to the readers to think that...

A new beginning - Primary School days

Primary School in 2009 2nd January 2009 was the start of a new school term. I took a day’s leave to ferry my son to Primary One on that day. Eager and excited we arrived in school with in full swing. We were early. We were greeted with glum looks. The tired faces shown by the teachers are visible to all. Perhaps it is the norm. Perhaps they need to display’sternness’ to young impressionable minds. Perhaps to ensure the new students will not ride roughshod over them in time to come To strike fear in their hearts - this is almost military school. Is this regimental style going to work? Fear, Intimidation, control is the order of the day? This is supposed to be a primary school, for goodness sake! There’s a thin fine line between being fear and respect.
